David A. Grindle
General Grand Master

Hello Companions,

\"GGMDG\"

It has been a sort of restful month. Karen and I traveled to Maggie Valley, North Carolina, for the Annual North Carolina York Rite Summer Assembly.  We had a great time visiting with old friends and meeting new friends.  This visit allowed us time to visit with Companion David Lee Hargett, Jr., one final time.  Companion Hargett will be missed, but his legacy will live on for a long time.  While we were in Maggie Valley, I installed Companion Russell Bridges as the Right Puissant General Grand Captain of the Guard and Companion J. David Cashion as the Most Illustrious Ambassador to North Carolina.  These changes were made because Right Puissant Companion John Belanger resigned because of new commitments for his time.

After returning home and spending some time in the woods picking Huckleberries, I traveled to Hampton, Virginia, to attend the Biennial Supreme Assembly of the International Rainbow for Girls.  It was an enjoyable time especially observing all the energy from these assembled young ladies.  They initiated three girls during the sessions.  There also was a delegate that had only been a Rainbow Girl for one (1) month.  The Banquet was amazing because there were 101 round tables with space for 10 girls and/or adults in the hall (that’s 1010 for dinner), and three rows of head tables.  One theme that I heard throughout the summaries of Grand Assembly activities was the assigning of a Big Sister to the new initiates!!  I know we assign coaches to work through the proficiencies in the Lodges, but this seems to be more of a mentor program.  Do the lodges, chapters, councils, or commanderies assign mentors to the new Brothers, Companions, and Sir Knights?  Where is the top line signer of the petition in this mentoring process?  This is one way to make a new member feel welcome and to teach Masonry!!

I then traveled to Oak Brook Hills, Illinois, for the Annual meeting of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America.  This was the end of Most Eminently Distinguished Brother James Patton’s Biennium.  It also was the end of my service to the College as the Grand Governor of Idaho.  The session included a very well conferred Order of the Purple Cross on approximately 140 Companion Knights and the installation of the new officers for the Biennium.  The new Grand Governor of Idaho was installed.  Many discussions were held with the other leaders of the International York Rite Community.  They were very productive.

This month sees the General Grand Officers becoming very busy after a short lull in the Grand Council Activities.  We will be busy visiting many of the Grand Council Assemblies and Regional Conferences between now and the middle of November.  We will be attending a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation in Indianapolis, Indiana, in October.

Please keep looking at the Website in the “Resources”, “Awards”, for the posting of the article about the Veteran Medal.  The article will include an application form to acquire the medal.  We expect to be in possession of the medals by the end of August.  We will accept applications from all qualified veterans from any Chartered Council.

Enjoy the final months of this year and be sure to participate in your four York Rite Bodies to further your experiences in our craft.
