Select Master Ritual Passport

The General Grand Council Ritual passports are designed to assist you in completing the requirements for each of the degree bars for the Ritual Award. Their purpose is to centralize the documentation for each of the qualifying tasks of that degree and serve as a beautiful memento of your journey. When all of the requirements are accomplished, please present the completed passport to your Grand Recorder or Recorder (for General Grand Council Subordinate Councils). He will then follow the ordering process for your Ritualist Medal and degree bar. The jewel and bars for each degree awarded are available at no cost to a Cryptic Mason in Good Standing of a Member Grand Council or a Subordinate Council of the General Grand Council.

Included is what and how to complete the requirements for Ronald L. Thomas Ritual Award with a Select Master Bar.

Ronald L. Thomas Ritual Award

R.L. Thomas Ritual Award

This Award is intended to inspire you to commit Cryptic ritual to memory AND to engage and participate in ritualistic work within the Cryptic Rite. Originating from the Alabama Grand Council Ritual Award, the key aspects of earning the Award are that you are able to recite perfectly and deliver appropriately. The high standards set will preserve those Sacred Treasures which are ours through Masonic heritage.

Recitation

Recitation points cannot be counted as performance points and must be earned by delivering a verbatim presentation of the different roles outlined below to the officer or committee designated in your jurisdiction, usually a (Deputy) Grand Lecturer, Council Ritual Officer, or elective Grand Officer. The “letter perfect” standard ensures that the exact verbiage is committed to memory. The amount of memorization points is higher to encourage learning multiple roles. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding, thereby improving the performance of the ritual.

Performance (Separate from Recitation)

Performance points cannot count for recitation points and must be earned by performing roles as a part of the degree team. This requires that the essential elements are effectively communicated – it may be acceptable to overlook errors in script as long as the meaning is clear and you have demonstrated the floorwork, non-verbal, and inflection aspects of performing as a part of the degree team. Approval of these items will also be done as designated in your jurisdiction, but is usually a (Deputy) Grand Lecturer, Degree or Festival Director, or elective Grand Officer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ritual do we use? Your Member Grand Council’s approved Ritual or the General Grand Council Ritual may be used if authorized by your Grand Council for the purpose of this Award. If you are in a Subordinate Council (reports directly to General Grand Council), the General Grand Council Ritual must be used.

Do I need to do both Recitation and Performance? Yes. The two types of requirements are included by design to encourage the participation to include both memorization and the intricacies of performance. The idea is to tell the “STORY” – and is better served if memorized.

Do I need to use a Passport to get the Award? No. The Passports are designed to make the process easier but are not required.

When is the jewel awarded? Upon completing requirements for ANY bar, you get the jewel and that bar. Subsequent bars are awarded and are then added to the jewel.
